Lakewood Park Association

Lakewood Park is an area of several acres bordering Wyman Pond on the east. Much of the land in the park was originally owned by the Estabrook family. There were several small lots with tents and camps during the summers. People would travel there on the trolley that came from Fitchburg and stopped by the dam. They walked from there along East Road to the park . The largest section of the park was purchased in 1918 by the Aamunkoitto Temperance Society of Fitchburg Massachusetts. Aamunkoitto is a Finnish word meaning dawn or sunrise. It was one of many temperance societies flourishing in New England, educating the public about the dangers of alcohol. Lakewood Park was created as a place for members to enjoy the summer weather while next to the water. They built a dance pavilion, a cafeteria, and two camps, and held socials and festivals there, producing income. The central area of the park became known as Finn Town and was marked that way on maps. The society continued to used the park facilities until 1934.
